In partnership with the World Bank, NIRN Nepal successfully led an initiative to revive the lost intangible heritage of Kathmandu, with a special focus on the traditional dance-drama Kartik Naach. Also known as Kachhalā Pyākhan (Nepal Bhasa: कछला प्याखं), Kartik Naach was first performed in 1641 AD under the patronage of Malla King Siddhi Narsingh Malla. This vibrant performance, held annually during the month of Kartik (October–November), represents a significant cultural legacy of the Kathmandu Valley.
As part of the initiative, NIRN Nepal also worked to empower youth from marginalized communities by involving them in cultural heritage conservation activities. In collaboration with the Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City, and with funding support from the World Bank, the project encouraged youth participation in preserving and promoting local traditions—ensuring that these cultural expressions continue to live on through new generations.
This project not only celebrated heritage but also fostered community engagement and inclusion, creating a lasting impact on both cultural preservation and youth development.
