Religious Leaders Join Hands to Promote HPV Vaccination in Nepal

National Inter- Religious Network Nepal (NIRN) played a key role in supporting the HPV vaccination campaign held from Magh 22 to Falgun 7, 2081, which was organized by the National Health Education, Information and Communication Centre (NHEICC) in partnership with UNICEF Nepal. The campaign aimed to protect girls from cervical cancer, which remains a serious health concern all over the world. The HPV vaccine is an effective way to prevent this disease, when given in certain age group but many people still hesitate due to fear, misinformation, or cultural beliefs.
To address this, religious leaders across the country joined hands to raise awareness and encourage communities to accept the vaccine. As trusted voices, faith leaders were able to connect health messages with local values and beliefs, helping families understand the importance of vaccination. NIRN played a vital role in mobilizing these leaders and guiding their involvement throughout the campaign.

One inspiring example was Babita Jha, a religious leader who led awareness sessions under the Integrated Nutrition and Sustainable Livelihood Program. She reached more than 80 women in Ekadhara Rural Municipality, including Wards 1, 2, and 3. Through open discussions, she helped women understand how the HPV vaccine works and why it is essential for protecting future generations.
The campaign proved that when faith and health come together, it creates a powerful force for positive change. Religious leaders were not only able to spread accurate health information but also address fears and doubts in a Culturally sensitive way.

Going forward, NIRN remains committed to working alongside health partners to promote community well-being. Religious leaders can continue to play an important role in spreading messages about maternal health, nutrition, disease prevention, and more. With proper training and support, they can help bridge the gap between medical services and community trust.
